Youth-Gang Renunciation Program
Texas Alliance for Crime Prevention, Inc. has developed, funded, and implemented an anti-gang program that coordinates prevention, intervention, and reentry strategies. Understanding that street gang activities transcend ages of members, we have merged in developing a program to reduce gang membership and gang affiliation. The program outlines community mobilization, social intervention, educational and vocational advancements, suppression, and change and development. Most youth's join gangs between the ages of 12 and 15, making prevention a critical strategy within a comprehensive response to gangs that includes intervention, suppression and reentry. Texas Alliance for Crime Prevention, Inc. collaborates with the City of Houston Mayor's Anti-Gang Office to ensure that we have an array of information and resources available on gangs. Our strategy is to reduce gang activity in targeted neighborhoods by incorporating a broad spectrum of research-based interventions to address the range of personal, family, and community factors that contribute to juvenile delinquency and gang activity. This approach attempts to integrate Federal, state, and local resources to incorporate state-of-the-art practices in prevention, intervention, and suppression.
The Youth-Gang Renunciation Program is a school-based, instructed program administered by Texas Alliance for Crime Prevention, Inc. Using a community wide approach to combat risk factors, the goal of the Youth-Gang Renunciation Program is to help youth develop positive life skills that will help them avoid gang involvement and violent behavior. The Youth-Gang Renunciation Program consists of five (5) interrelated components, each designed to target different audiences: Elementary School, Middle School, High School, Summer Components, and Families Component. The components can stand alone to teach the necessary skills and attitudes that will help youth resist the pressures to become involved in gang behavior and avoid situations that could lead to violence. All five (5) components include Substance Abuse, Anger Management, and Cognitive Intervention Counseling.
It is the goal of Texas Alliance for Crime Prevention, Inc. and our Youth-Gang Renunciation Program to reduce the level of gang membership and to reduce the impact that gangs have in facilitating antisocial behaviors. We have implemented a program that has been shown to reduce violence, delinquency, and drug use. The purpose of this project is to implement a program that has the highest probability for success with gang members or youth at risk for gang membership, modify them to be responsive to the particular needs of gang members, and then implement and rigorously evaluate their effectiveness. We believe that with this program we can prevent violence and criminal activity, and develop a positive relationship with law enforcement.
